2021 Workshops & Events

Wood Mallet Turning with Nalu Andrade of Na Maka Kahiko
Saturday, February 13th
8AM–10 AM, 9AM–11AM, 10AM–12PM, 11AM–1PM; 1PM–3PM, 2PM–4PM, and 3PM–5PM

One hour of instruction on making a carving mallet out of kiawe wood and one hour for practice. Upon completion of one-hour workshop, students will be able to test out their mallet for no longer than one hour using provided wood and tools. Participants are welcome to bring their own chisels if they wish. The additional hour will be mainly self-directed with instructor supervising. Materials provided include lathe, carving tools, kiawe wood for mallets, and wood for carving.
Cost: $60 for members; $85 for new members; includes finished mallet and practice piece. Each class will be limited to 4 participants plus one instructor; only two people will begin each class at one time. Time slots will be given on a first come, first serve basis as payment is received. Participants are required to wear a mask the entire time they are on site. Contemporary Kūpeʻe Lau Hala with Becky Lau (Live Webinar)
Saturday, February 27th | 1PM–4 PM
A beginner’s class to make contemporary kūpeʻe or apo (bracelets) using traditional lau hala (Pandanus tectorius) weaving in two colors. We will begin with a special guest appearance by renowned Kumu Hula and award winning musician Pueo Pata, who will tell the story of lau hala. Participants will then follow along with Becky Lau and MNBG Executive Director Tamara Sherrill live online to make a kūpe‘e at home. Becky is an accomplished lau hala weaver who has taught kūpeʻe lau hala at MNBG annual events for many years.
Cost: $30 for members; $55 for new members; includes weaving kits to be picked up at MNBG before the class. Space is limited. Email info@mnbg.org for reservations.

‘Ele‘ele Kalo with Namea Hoshino (In Person)
Saturday, March 13th | 9AM–12PM
Learn about the ‘Ele‘ele family of kalo (taro) with Kalo Varieties Manager, Namea Hoshino.  Participants will learn about the cultural uses of the ‘Ele‘ele group of taro and identification techniques. Samples for tasting will be included.

Piko Kalo with Namea Hoshino (In Person)
Saturday, July 17th | 9AM–12PM
Learn about the Piko family of kalo (taro) with Kalo Varieties Manager, Namea Hoshino.  Participants will learn about the cultural uses of the Piko group of taro and identification techniques. Samples for tasting will be included.

Living Wreath Making with Native Plants (In Person)

Native plants provide more than just food and habitat for wildlife: they also provide great beauty all year long!  Learn to make a living wreath from Native Hawaiian Plants in time for the Holidays with MNBG Executive Director, Tamara Sherrill.
