2020 Workshops & Events:
Beginning Carving
Saturday, December 12th | 8:30AM – 11:30AM & 12PM – 3PM
Beginning Carving workshop with Nalu Andrade of Na Maka Kahiko introducing participants to different types of carving tools, carving techniques, and characteristics of different types of woods. Introduction to carving chisels and micro chisels. A hands-on workshop where students will learn how to use the tools to make different cuts, profiling, form, and technique. Upon completion of the workshop, students will create a reference board with the various types of cuts and an ‘ohe kapala. Cost: $75, or $50 for current garden members. Learn about the Mana family of kalo (taro) with MNBG Kalo Varieties Manager, Namea Hoshino. Participants will learn about the cultural uses of the Mana group of taro and identification techniques. Learn to work with lau niu (coconut leaves): weave, pattern, shaping, and form. Participants will weave a lei poʻo (head lei), peʻahi (fan), and a hanging ʻumeke (bowl) with Lahaina weavers, Uʻi Kahue and Mario Siatris. Cost: $65, or $40 for current garden members.
