Learn the cultural importance of the voyaging plant - Niu (Coconut, Cocos nucifera). Experience working with lau niu (coconut leaves): using exercises in weave, pattern, shaping, and form, creating keepsakes to take home. Attendees will learn the kinipopo (ball), pala’ie (game), peahi (fan), and hanging ‘umeke (bowl) With Kumu ulana niu Mario Siatris and U‘i Kahue of Maui Grown 808. Also covered will be sustainable gathering practices and prep.

Learn the basics of ulana lau niu (coconut weaving/plaiting) while making a wreath to last all seasons with Kumu ulana niu Mario Siatris and Uʻi Kahue. Items woven from coconut leaf will last another 8 to 10 years! Also covered will be sustainable gathering practices and prep. Time allowing, a haku lei poʻo will also be demonstrated. Decorating with fresh flora/pua will top the day! - You can do this!

Cancellations (paid workshops): Space is limited and registering without payment does not guarantee a spot. Once paid registration is full, MNBG will accept unpaid registrations in the order they are received to place you on a waitlist. Refunds for cancellations will be given only if you call 249-2798 to inform us of the cancellation at least 24 hours before the workshop begins. No-shows and cancellations less than 24 hours before a workshop will forfeit registration and membership fees.
